One of America’s greatest artists, Barry Moser has been a strong influence on me, as well as a great friend. The intensity and determination with which Barry seeks the best composition, emotion and meaning in every image is an inspiration to me. Melissa and I were able to visit Barry this summer, and this portrait is from that short but sweet visit.

The Laura series are about surrounding one’s self with symbolic beauty and protective rituals. Imagine the fine robes of a priest, or an empress, or in a procession. Here Laura holds around herself embroideries from Oaxaca, in which are embedded the hours of care by craftswomen.

One of the great things about the Russian Academy is its emphasis on composing from imagination. We were taught to yes, paint what we see, but also to be able to use our training to invent images not found in real life. When painting goddesses in particular, this comes in handy.
