One of America’s greatest artists, Barry Moser has been a strong influence on me, as well as a great friend. The intensity and determination with which Barry seeks the best composition, emotion and meaning in every image is an inspiration to me. Melissa and I were able to visit Barry this summer, and this portrait is from that short but sweet visit.

The Laura series are about surrounding one’s self with symbolic beauty and protective rituals. Imagine the fine robes of a priest, or an empress, or in a procession. Here Laura holds around herself embroideries from Oaxaca, in which are embedded the hours of care by craftswomen.

I met an interesting young actress in Russia, whose name was Tatiana. Painting her I used the format of an icon, like a pyramid, to bring the viewer to the subject’s face. She herself is sincere, and so the idea of personifying sincerity was an obvious choice. This is in a series of paintings called “Gossip.” Her integrity has calmed the vicious and noisy birds.
